About Us

Democracy in Color is a political media organization focused on political strategy and analysis at the intersection of race and politics.

We create and elevate content that influences public opinion and steers political behavior towards a more progressive and inclusive country. Using research and data-driven analysis, our multimedia content includes books, a podcast, a newsletter, articles, and reports.

Democracy in Color was founded by Steve Phillips, author of The New York Times bestselling book Brown Is the New White and national bestseller How We Win the Civil War.

OUR WORK:

  • Podcast: “Democracy in Color with Steve Phillips” is a color-conscious political podcast hosted by political thought leader and writer Steve Phillips with co-host Sharline Chiang. Join Steve and Sharline every other Thursday for a conversation that is unafraid and unapologetic about grappling with some of the toughest issues in politics today. Tune in for thought-provoking, unforgettable conversations with today’s top leaders of the progressive movement, as well as journalists, authors, academics, activists, and political experts. Guests have included: Stacey Abrams, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Beto O’Rourke, Rep. Summer Lee, Rep. Jamaal Bowman, and Emmy Ruiz.

  • Newsletter: Through the Democracy in Color newsletter—which subscribers receive every Thursday in their email inbox—we share insights on race and politics, and provide a historical context to better understand today’s political climate. We strive to provide those who are passionate about justice and equality with timely, thought-provoking content, analysis, and tools they can use to increase insight and impact.

  • Blog: Our blog contains articles and essays written by members of the Democracy in Color team, as well as changemakers in our network, to lift up the diverse voices of the New American Majority and shed light on how we can move forward together to build the multiracial democracy we want.

  • Special Reports: Periodically we publish special reports on important issues. In 2018 we published a comprehensive report, “The Trump Administration's Record of Racism,” documenting the first 200 examples of racism by Trump and his administration. In early August 2020 we released a new and updated version of that report.
