About the Podcast

Steve Phillips—author of The New York Times bestselling book Brown Is the New White and national bestseller How We Win the Civil War; columnist for The Nation and The Guardian; and founder of Democracy in Color—is the host of the color-conscious political podcast “Democracy in Color With Steve Phillips.”

New episodes are released every two weeks on Thursdays. Join Steve and his co-host Sharline Chiang for a conversation that is unafraid and unapologetic about grappling with some of today’s toughest topics in politics.

As one of the nation’s top political thought leaders, Steve invites listeners to learn how the key to Democrats and the progressive ecosystem winning and saving our democracy lies in running towards, rather than away from, issues related to race and justice.

Centering the fight against white supremacy and racism and the imperative of mobilizing people of color and progressive whites—this podcast illuminates the proven path to victory and also introduces listeners to some of today’s top leaders, as well as “Hidden Figures,” of the progressive movement who are driving the engine of social and political change in this country. Guests include elected officials as well as journalists, authors, academics, progressive organization leaders, and activists.

Guests have included: Stacey Abrams; Elizabeth Warren; Beto O’Rourke; former Mayor of Stockton, CA Michael Tubbs; New York Times reporter Astead Herndon; activist Jessica Byrd; New Georgia Project Action Fund CEO Nse Ufot; former president of the Center for American Progress, Neera Tanden; MI Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist, and GA Rep. Nikema Williams.
